Healthy Relationships 101
The Lab School for Collaborative Studies Spring 2009
Relationships
“Learned about how marriage is a give and take partnership.”
“I was most interested in the relationship topic because at this point in my life it is something I can relate to…I mean as a teen I am going through relationships with not only my boyfriend but classmates and parents. By talking to my parents I was also happy to get to know them and learn more…and that brought me closer to them.”
“Mutually valuing each other, actually loving and caring for a partner…I really learned a bit more on who I really am and it kind of made me think more….”
“[The relationship questionnaire] allowed me to be honest and I could tell the truth and know that it would be confidential and actually cared about.”
Communication
“Everything was helpful especially NVC…I learned that we shouldn’t blame it on the other person and we all have needs and feelings that we need to keep in mind.”
“I realized how I have to state my feelings towards someone to be able to get through to them. It has made me more aware.”
“Many things that you think you feel are actually just accusations. (I feel judged, manipulated.)”
Gender Roles
“I enjoyed learning about relationships and how we are both masculine and feminine.
It shows stereotypes being disproven…I realized what’s really masculine and feminine about me.”
“Learning about gender roles and how they play a part in relationships.”
“That we are defined a lot by stereotypes.”
“The topic that interested me most was role of men and women in society because those things just interest me (in an anthropological way).”
“[The history of women] made the most impact on me because it was nice to learn who fought for my freedom and right to vote. As a black woman I’ve learned over the years that a lot of people fought for the life that I have now.”
